Ultimate Late Fall Guide: Catch More Trout on Cowichan River

Contributed by Ray Gouchie – Local Guide with VIFlyFishing.com

The Cowichan River system is absolutely firing on all cylinders this November, and we couldn’t be more excited to share what’s happening on the water! With ideal water levels settling in and those perfect crisp temperatures we’ve been waiting for, conditions are dialed in for Cowichan River fishing like we haven’t seen in months. Whether you’re chasing trout, targeting salmon, or getting ready for the upcoming steelhead season, this is your time to get out there.

Ray Gouchie, our local expert with over 30 years of fly fishing experience and more than 200 guided days annually, has been keeping a close eye on conditions throughout the system. His latest reports have us buzzing with excitement about what’s ahead through December and into the prime Cowichan River steelhead season.

What’s Biting Right Now

The variety of fish available in the Cowichan River system right now is simply incredible. Here’s what’s keeping our guests and Ray’s clients busy on the water:

Rainbow & Brown Trout are absolutely feeding aggressively right now. Earlier in the season, they were focused on salmon eggs, but we’re seeing a shift toward flesh flies as the Chinook and Chum complete their spawning cycles. The trout fishing Cowichan Valley has been exceptional, with some of the biggest rainbows we’ve seen all season making appearances.

Coho Salmon are still very active and will continue to provide excitement for a few more weeks. These feisty fish add that extra punch to every outing, and their aggressive takes never get old. If you’ve never hooked into a fresh Coho on the fly, you’re missing out on one of the most thrilling experiences our river has to offer.

Steelhead are the fish everyone’s talking about for the months ahead. While they’re expected to arrive in earnest by mid to late December, February marks the absolute prime window for these legendary fish. Ray’s already prepping his gear and scouting the best runs for what promises to be an outstanding season.

Cutthroat & Dolly Varden are thriving in the nearby walk-and-wade streams, perfect for those wanting a side-stream adventure or a change of pace from the main river. These beautiful char offer excellent opportunities for anglers looking to explore the quieter corners of our watershed.

What to Use – Ray’s Expert Recommendations

Ray’s been dialing in his fly selection based on current conditions, and here are the patterns that are producing right now (images embedded throughout this section show the specific flies in action):

Egg Patterns are absolutely essential right now, especially in areas where trout are staging downstream of spawning salmon. The natural drift and presentation of a well-tied egg pattern can make all the difference between a slow day and a banner outing.

Flesh Flies have become key players now that we’re seeing the salmon life cycle winding down. As salmon begin dying off, trout and char are keying in on these meaty offerings. Ray’s custom flesh fly patterns have been producing some incredible results.

Streamers and Soft Hackles are proving invaluable in deeper holes and during those magical low-light periods when fish target bulkier prey. Don’t overlook these patterns, especially if you’re fishing the deeper runs and pools.

Ray’s pro tip that’s been making all the difference: “Focus your casts near tail-outs, seams, and spawning beds. Trout and char are staging just downstream of active salmon zones, and that’s where the magic happens.”
