Introduction
This weeks Cowichan River fishing report is heading in the right direction, but the Cowichan River is still very low, but anticipation is running high. Early October has brought encouraging signs for what could be one of the best salmon seasons in years. Local guide Ray Gouchie reports that patience will pay off, with over 2,000 Chinook already making their way past the counting fence, hinting at a record run in the making.
Current Conditions
Right now, the river’s holding pattern is all about water management. Authorities are keeping levels low until Cowichan Lake reaches about 75% capacity. Recent rains have helped a little, but for now, the river remains slow and shallow. In Ray’s words, “Fishing it right now wouldn’t just be tough, it wouldn’t be fair to the fish.”
Instead, the focus is on what’s coming next. Once flows are released and the river breathes again, expect a sudden burst of activity from both salmon and trout.

What’s Happening in the Water
Chinook Salmon: Over 2,000 already counted as of September 30. Expect the numbers to climb quickly as flow increases.
Trout: Sitting deep and waiting. When the river rises, they’ll be on the move and hungry.
Looking Ahead
The next couple of weeks could be a turning point. Flow increases are planned soon, opening migration routes for salmon and giving trout the oxygen-rich water they’ve been waiting for. Mid to late November is shaping up to be prime fall fishing with cool water, crisp mornings, and aggressive trout feeding before winter sets in.
Ray adds, “Patience now means magic later. Once the water starts moving, you’ll want to be ready.”
Conditions at a Glance
- Water Level: Low but stable; controlled flow
- Recent Rainfall: Light, improving weekly
- Best Window: Late October through November
Conservation First
Ray reminds everyone that fishing low-flow sections right now can put unnecessary stress on salmon. Waiting for proper water levels helps protect spawning fish and ensures better fishing for everyone later in the season. Conservation is key to protecting these important runs.
Plan Your Fall Fishing Getaway
The stage is set for an incredible fall on Vancouver Island. Once the rains come, the Cowichan River will come alive, and you’ll want to be here when it does.
