Spring fly fishing season has officially arrived in the Cowichan Valley, and if you have been waiting for the perfect moment to get your line in the water, that moment is now. There is something truly special about Cowichan River trout fishing this time of year. The air is crisp, the greenery is starting to pop, and the trout are becoming more active with every passing day. Whether you are a seasoned angler or someone searching for a peaceful Vancouver Island fishing trip, the Cowichan River is calling.
Here at Riverside by Cowichan Lake Cottages, our team recently took a “guides day off” to get first-hand eyes on the river conditions. We can happily report that Cowichan River fly fishing is absolutely fantastic right now — and it is only getting better as the days get longer. Special thanks to Ray and his team for this update. If you’re looking for a guide contact Ray at VIFLYFISHING for your best shot at these trophy trout experiences.
Cowichan River Conditions: Spring 2026 Fishing Report
The Cowichan River has plenty of water right now. High water levels mean more room for the fish to move and more challenges for the angler, but the rewards are well worth it. While March was slightly cooler this year than some expected, this has actually set us up for a legendary spring. That cooler start means the water temperatures are rising at just the right pace to trigger some incredible insect activity without things getting too warm too fast.
If you are planning a Vancouver Island fishing trip, April and May on the Cowichan River are looking to be absolutely incredible. The timing is aligning perfectly for those who love technical spring fly fishing BC style, and for those who simply want to experience one of the best fly fishing spots on Vancouver Island.
Mayfly and Caddis Hatch on the Cowichan River: What Anglers Need to Know
One of the most exciting parts of spring fishing is the return of the hatches. Right now, we are seeing both Mayflies and Caddis flies coming off the surface. There is nothing quite like the sight of a trout rising to take a dry fly in the middle of a afternoon hatch. It is pure magic.
When targeting these trout, we have been finding success using a mix of techniques. Nymphs are working great for those fish staying deeper in the water column, but as the temperature peaks in the early afternoon, switching to dry flies is the way to go. It requires a bit of patience and a gentle touch, but seeing that splash on the surface is a feeling you never get tired of.
Salmon Fry Patterns for Cowichan River Brown Trout
Beyond the surface insects, there is a whole other world of activity happening on the riverbed. Right now, the salmon fry are hatching from the gravel. This is like an all you can eat buffet for the resident trout. Because of this, we have been using minnow and fry patterns with great results.
Imitating these small fry requires a bit of a different strategy than traditional dry fly fishing. It involves a bit more movement and understanding how those little fry behave in the current. If you can mimic that darting motion, you are almost guaranteed to get some attention from a hungry brown trout.
Group Fly Fishing on the Cowichan River: A Day on the Water
Sometimes we get so busy making sure our guests are having the time of their lives that we have to remind ourselves to soak it all in too. A group of us took a day off recently to hit the water together, and it reminded us why we love this place so much. It is not just about the catch: it is about the camaraderie, the quiet moments between casts, and the shared excitement when someone hooks a beauty.
Fishing together is what we are all about.
