October 27th 2025 -Fishing Report by Tristan O’Brian, fishing guide and founder of Fishing For Firefighters.

Cowichan River fishing is off to a great start! The first autumn rains have awakened Cowichan River fishing season. Early mornings reveal chinook salmon powering through emerald seams, as coffee steam mixes with crisp air. Hungry rainbows and browns are snapping at drifting eggs during our trip.
Cowichan River Fishing Report: Cowichan River Right Now
- Salmon run: strong 2025 returns with numbers by far better than historical returns for Chinook and other species. Restoration is working.
- Trout bite: We found rainbows and browns keyed on eggs. Small streamers and leeches moved fish. Overcast often woke up the browns.
- Flows and clarity: post rain levels felt ideal, with fish feeding through the day.

First Responders on the Fly
We wrapped up our first ever Fishing For Firefighters weekend with eight anglers, a few first timers in the mix, a few veterans but all great people. Light showers didn’t slow anything. We landed plenty of healthy rainbows, a couple salmon and two trophy class browns. Laughter, wet waders by the door, and stories by the firepit made for an epic weekend.

What a Great Stay at Cowichan Lake Cottages
Our stay at Riverside by Cowichan Lake Cottages was unforgettable. The property offers flexible configurations for both large fishing groups and cozy family getaways, with kitchenettes in every suite to make meal prep a breeze. We loved being close to the water and within easy walking distance to local restaurants which was ideal after a day on the river. Outdoor gathering spaces are amazing for relaxing or sharing stories with friends around the firepit while someone works the BBQ to make meals. The private dock adds a special touch: it’s perfect for tying up your own boat, meeting fishing guides, or simply stepping out to enjoy the river. Riverside truly delivers a unique Cowichan River experience tailored for both anglers and families seeking comfort, adventure, and convenience.
Quick Tips For Cowichan River Fishing
My takeaways this weekend:
- Timing: mornings were prime. Cloud cover favored browns.
- Flies: egg patterns and small beads, swung buggers or leeches, and subtle nymphs.
